Blues can kick on says John

Cardiff Blues caretaker coach Paul John is hoping their bonus point victory at Edinburgh can pave the way for more success against the Scarlets on Sunday.

The former Wales Sevens boss saw his team secure an unlikely 29-22 win at Meggetland, a result that lifted the Blues up to ninth in the RaboDirect PRO12 standings. Victory means that the Arms Park region move above Newport Gwent Dragons in the table and no longer own the unwanted tag of the lowest placed Welsh region.

John was quick to praise his players’ hard work as they backed up a stunning win over Ulster and he is now hoping they can continue their run of fine form when Judgement Day takes centre stage at the Millennium Stadium.

“The Scarlets game is going to be a great occasion at the Millennium Stadium so we are looking forward to it,” said John.

“It’s close to us – you can’t get much closer to the Arms Park – so hopefully we will have a lot of support and it will be a great atmosphere and a great day of rugby for the regional game.

“Welsh derby games are generally really good games and very passionate affairs so it will be some occasion.

“We will keep playing the way we are, enjoying how we are playing, training hard and performing with passion and pride. If we do that, we will get the results we deserve.”

The Blues certainly deserved their win in Scotland as they put the bad memories of their previous away game at the Ospreys to bed in some style.

And a hat-trick of wins in their final three games would be the perfect way to finish what has been a difficult period for the Blues following the resignation of former boss Phil Davies last month.

“We worked hard and played some cracking rugby and thoroughly enjoyed the game,” added John. “There are areas we can improve on, we know that, but the attitude has been superb.

“We have Scarlets twice now before the end of the season and Connacht away, too. It’s important we finish well, keep this run going as long as we can and see where we end up in the league.”
