Coleg Sir Gar staged a superb fightback to beat Coleg y Cymoedd 25-22 in the WRU Wednesday League final at the Millennium Stadium.

It was a rematch of last year’s final, and having lost only one game all year and having a squad full of Welsh Under-18 internationals, Cymoedd went in to the game as firm favourites.

The Steelers suffered a nightmare start with Cymoedd scoring off their first attack to go 7-0 ahead.

Coleg Sir Gâr reacted well and managed to control territory and possession, but resolute Cymoedd defence limited the Steelers to a penalty from Daniel Jones.

Cymoedd always looked dangerous with ball in hand and they scored two quick tries to gave them a 19-3 lead.

This, combined with the loss of influential captain Tom Phillips through injury, made Sir Gar’s challenge to retain the trophy a mammoth task.

They needed to score before the break to get back in the game, and with the very last play of the half, the forwards took control and from a driving line-out Shaun Evans powered his way over the line. Jones converted from the touchline to make the score at the interval 19-10.

The first score of the second half fell to the Cymoedd with a penalty.

Sir Gâr started to play with more confidence and with half-backs Kieran Hardy and Jones controlling matters, the Steelers started to play with direction and penetrate the opposition defence.

Again it was the forwards who led the way with a powerful driving line-out giving Shaun Evans his second try.

This gave Sir Gâr a real lift and soon powerful wing Ryan Nunes burst through some tired defence to score in the corner to tie the game at 22-all.

Momentum was now with Sir Gâr and Cymoedd ill-discipline gave fly-half Jones the a chance to win it. With nerves of steel he kicked a penalty to complete the comeback.
