The 27-year-old from Carmarthen didn’t make either the Probables or Possibles squad in his last trial outing, a trial for Wales U16’s, and ran the touch instead but Owens is determined to rise to the challenge of Friday evening.
“I’m really looking forward to it to be honest,” he said.
“It’s the first one that has been done in a while and it’s a chance to pit yourself against the best in Wales and try to get selected.
“The last Probables v Possibles match I was involved in I ran the touch. That was for Wales U16’s I think and I didn’t make either team!
“There will be massive pressure on us all as we try to impress, we just have to do the basics right and stick to the way we usually play.
“Both sides will have pressure, if you are in the Probables its about working hard and trying to stay on top of things whilst the Possibles are trying to put their hand up.
“It’s simply about turning up on Friday and hopefully getting the nod for South Africa.”
Owens will go up against former Scarlets team-mate and Wales captain Matthew Rees in the front-row and he has been blown away by Rees’ return to the game.
“The way Matthew has come back has been incredible to be honest,” he said.
“I remember seeing him during the Six Nations when he had the all clear and all the hard work he was putting in to come back. It’s a credit to him and he’s enjoying his rugby which is really showing.
“Until this season I had never played against him and suddenly this will be the third time in a short space of time.
“He is a quality hooker and a quality player and it’s a big personal challenge for me on Friday.”
