Style makes Scarlets smile

Scarlets forwards coach Danny Wilson has praised the style of Friday’s win over Newport Gwent Dragons.

Wilson was delighted with the fact that victory secured a place in the European Rugby Champions Cup for next season but it was the manner in which they achieved that feat that really stood out.

The Scarlets had been below par in their Judgement Day defeat to Cardiff Blues, while their wins over Zebre and Connacht and the back-to-back losses at Ulster and Glasgow that followed their stunning success against Munster had been inconsistent affairs.

“It was important that we cemented that place in the Rugby Champions Cup and, perhaps more importantly, the style we did it in as well. It was important that we secured a performance,” said Wilson, after his side scored four tries in a 34-23 win.

“We’ve been disappointed with elements of our performances recently, especially the first half against the Blues, and it was important that we bounced back. We did that. We got what we needed – the points to get into Europe.

“The most important thing for this game was a performance that we could be proud of and that’s the same for next week. We perhaps didn’t cement our place last year losing to Treviso. It’s a slightly different scenario this year, it was important we cemented that place in style.”

The Scarlets face the Blues in their final game of the season in Llanelli on Saturday afternoon and Wilson is keen to see them finish on a high, particularly given their disappointing defeat to the same opposition last month.

Wilson will move to Bristol this summer and he admits that a derby victory would be a great way to say goodbye.

“It will be emotional but all of that is secondary to a performance and a win and there’s no better way for players and coaches to move on than to get a win and a home win and hopefully we can pick that up next week,” added Wilson.

“We’ve hopefully gained some confidence off the back of this one going into the last game and last derby. Our first half performance (against the Blues) was pretty poor and we want to put that right, for us as a group in the last game of the season but, more importantly, for this passionate support that we get in this region.

“The game has a huge relevance, it’s a derby. Put aside the points, you want to win your home games and you definitely want to win your home derbies and we want to do that next week. We’ve got another chance to do that and I know these boys will be bouncing to do so.”
