Captain’s Alun Wyn Jones and Matthew Rees have revealed their respective Probables and Possibles kits for the forthcoming Wales Senior Trial, with the jerseys resembling ‘trials’ of old in traditional red versus white.

The first national trial in 14 years will take place a week tomorrow (Friday May 30) at the Liberty Stadium, with the players battling it out for a spot on the flight to South Africa for Wales’ summer tour.

The squads will meet up next Monday to begin their preparations, in two separate camps, ahead of the fixture.
Jones’ Probables side will feature in red with Rees’ squad in white and both skippers are looking forward to next week’s challenge, culminating in the trial on Friday evening.

“When I heard about the trial I was intrigued and apprehensive, it’s something different,” said Jones.

“A lot of people over the years have watched and played in trial matches and it’s always intriguing to play in a trial whatever level you play at.

“Next week and Friday night in particular will be a good chance for the coaches to look at a lot of players and a lot of positions where they might have question marks.

“It’s another big game that none of us will be taking lightly and it’s a huge opportunity.”

After a tough personal year, Rees has returned to the game in remarkable form and he can’t wait for next week’s opportunity.

“Going back six or seven months I probably wasn’t even thinking about playing rugby again, just to get back playing within this season was a massive achievement for myself,” he said.

“If I can get on that plane at the end of it all then it’s a bonus, it’s something I’ve been aspiring to.

“With it being an extended squad, it’s a great chance for a few of the boys on the fringes of the squad to have a taste of international rugby.

“The biggest thing is performing on the day and when you look at the two squads it’s going to be a very interesting game.

“It’s going to be physical and players are going to be trying to put their hands up.

“The Possibles team are going out there looking to show their worth and trying to make a statement and the Probables want to go out and put in a good performance ahead of that first Test.”
