Wales scored in the first moments of the game, through an Angus O’Brien penalty. His opposite number Rory Hutchison had the chance to equal matters after 10 minutes but put the kick wide. However, Scotland were the next to score with a try for Edinburgh Accies left wing Sam Pecqueur. Blindside flanker, Watsonians’ Neil Irvine-Hess put him clear 40 minutes out and Pecqueur ran to the line taking the score to 3-5 to the visitors.

However, Wales dominated the first half in possession and territory and three tries resulted for Dragons forwards Scott Matthews and Luke Garrett, who were driven over the line, and Dafydd Howells who showed scintillating pace to run over 60 metres down the left wing. O’Brien added the extras, converting all three tries to take the score to 24-5.

Sam Pecqueur scored a late try for Scotland, converted by Hutchison to make the score more equal at 24-12 at the break.

Wales displayed more intent as they prepared to face Fiji in their opening Junior World Championship game on June 2, and RGC centre Harri Evans scored an impressive try involving replacement full back Ashley Evans nine minutes into the second half, converted by Ethan Davies.

Scotland put Wales’ defensive structures to the test as expected in the second half but Byron Hayward’s men came through well and despite a raft of changes, the side kept their shape, except for conceding an easy try for Jamie Farndale through an initial interception pass in Wales’ half, Ben Chalmers adding the conversion to take the final score to 31-19.

Wales scorers: Tries: Scott Matthews, Dafydd Howells, Luke Garrett, Harri Evans; Cons: Angus O’Brien (3), Ethan Davies; Pen: O’Brien.

Scotland scorers: Tries: Sam Pecqueur (2), Jamie Farndale; Cons: Rory Hutchison, Ben Chalmers
