The Championship team started the match at high pace with their strong running backs making significant inroads into the Ystrad Rhondda defence.
Bargoed crossed the Ystrad line twice early in the first half and despite a comeback by their rivals, who this season played in Division 1 east, took a good lead into half time.
After half time Bargoed tried to build upon their lead by playing the same brand of pacey backplay that had brought them success earlier in the match but Ystrad Rhondda were resolute in defence.
That sound defence built confidence in the Ystrad Rhondda team and gradually they came back into the match.
A series of forceful attacks saw Ystrad Rhondda narrow the gap on the scoreboard and it looked as if the momentum that the Rhondda team now had would turn the tide completely and see them grasp the Trophy.
Bargoed reverted to a tighter game plan with their strong forwards to the fore. A Bargoed try 10 minutes from time appeared to have settled matters in favour of the Rhymney valley team but the never say die commitment of the Ystrad players led to another try which closed the difference between the two teams to a single point.
Ystrad Rhondda could not however manufacture the score that would have won the match for them. With some relief Bargoed heard the final whistle and by the narrowest of margins they claimed this season’s Mid District Cup.
