Pivac blaming ill-discipline for Edinburgh fightback

Wayne Pivac blamed a lack of discipline for his Scarlets side’s second-half slump in Edinburgh, which saw them throw away a 14-point lead.

The Scots fought back to claim a 20-20 draw at Murrayfield on Friday night to claim redemption for their 62-13 Guinness PRO12 thumping at the Ospreys a week earlier.

It was the second time this season the West Walians had wasted a commanding lead, after Ulster fought back from a 13-point lead to claim a 32-32 draw at Parc y Scarlets in round one of the Guinness PRO12.

Head Coach Pivac said: “We allowed Edinburgh back into the game and gave away too many penalties in the second half. We felt at half time that it was ours to win – as it was ours to lose. We did enough in the first half and if we’d have scored that other try it might well have been a different game. We’ve been starting our games well and a try in the first 40 seconds is a great way to get underway but we didn’t capitalise on the opportunities we created.”

Harry Robinson’s 32-second-score gave the Scarlets a seven-point head-start before Liam Williams latched onto Aled William’s offload to secure a 17-3 lead mid-way through the first half. But the Scarlets failed to score on two occasions when Edinburgh were reduced to 14 men when Cornell Du Preez and John Andress were yellow-carded.

And Pivac was left rueing those missed opportunities, with the imminent visit of the Newport Gwent Dragons to Parc y Scarlets on Sunday.

“In a tight game like that it’s about field position and staying in the arm wrestle. We need to be putting pressure on the opposition so that they’re the ones giving away the penalties. It was disappointing that we weren’t able to get the four points but we’re heading home next weekend and looking forward to playing in front of a passionate Scarlets crowd.

“We’ll be working on decision making under pressure this week and making sure that we can improve ahead of Dragons at home.”
