Cardiff Blues centre Adam Thomas is hoping to steer his side to clearer waters after being ‘thrown in at the deep-end’ at his new region.

The former Wales sevens captain joined Mark Hammett’s men this summer after narrowly missing out on the plate at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 28-year-old went on to get his first start at full-back in the Blues defeat to Glasgow before being moved to outside-centre for last weekend’s game against Ulster. And Thomas is determined to get his first win in Blue against reigning Guinness PRO12 champions Leinster on Friday night.

He said: “The first two games I have been involved in have been against Glasgow and Ulster so I’ve been thrown straight in at the deep end. But that’s where I want to be, I want to test myself week-in-week-out and that will be no different this weekend against Leinster and hopefully the boys can put in a performance.”

“I’m pretty pleased with how the first two games have gone for me. I haven’t felt out of place but there are a lot of things I can improve on. But I’m enjoying it and hopefully I can raise the level again against Leinster”

The ex Pontypridd man reckons a clinical approach is needed on their trip to Ireland after missing key opportunities in their two successive home defeats. And he plans to use his sevens prowess to cut open the reigning champions in their own backyard.

He said: “The boys have fronted up well in the last two games, especially in defence. If we were more clinical in areas then the scoreline could have been different. That’s what’s been the difference so far, Glasgow and Ulster took their chances and we didn’t.You don’t get too many opportunities to get over the line and that was the difference in the two games.

“I’ve been involved in sevens for the last four years and it’s really picked my game up. My accuracy is much better and my fitness has gone through the roof.”
