Yorkshire Carnegie had to withstand a might comeback from Aberavon before prevailing 32-43 in a British and Irish Cup encounter last night.

A very young Aberavon side were 24-0 down in almost as many minutes having conceded four tries, but, they not only tackled their hearts out and never gave up, but in a minor miracle, levelled it at 29-29 with not too long left to go.

Even at 32-36 with the final whistle close, Aberavon were on at least two points, but a final try by Carnegie denied them all but one bonus point.

The tries of the night belonged to the amazing winger Stefan Andrews, both coming in a seven-minute spell and bringing supporters off their feet. One finished a superb passing move and one was almost the length of the field.

Flanker Lee Purnell scored a fine try and lock Sam Williams went over for the first try in a forward power-drive. Fly half Sam Damjanovic kicked three of the four conversions and a brace of penalties.

There were club debuts for prop Rhys Hardy (Cwmavon), wing Joe Thomas (Ospreys Academy) and full back Kieran Harris (formerly Clifton College), while scrum half Jacob Flynn (Aberavon Quins Youth) had his first match for the club at home.
