Jones extends Ospreys spell

Back-rower Ieuan Jones will remain at the Liberty Stadium into the new year after extending his loan from Cardiff Blues.

The 21-year old from Aberbargoed was brought to the Ospreys at the end of October on an emergency loan after the Ospreys lost seven back-rowers through injury or international call-ups, and has made a positive impact in his three appearances for the region to date.

Although he isn’t registered for the European Rugby Champions Cup, Jones will provide much needed cover for some crucial Guinness PRO12 games during the festive period.

Andrew Millward, Rugby General Manager, said: “Ieuan has done really well since coming to the Ospreys as emergency cover. He has settled in to our environment during a very busy period and has shown the potential that we knew he had.

“This is a very busy time of the year so we are grateful to the Blues for allowing him to stay with us until after the Six Nations. It’s a crucial period for the region so to have someone like Ieuan available, with his positive attitude on and off the field, is a real bonus for us.”

Wales no.8 Dan Baker has been ruled out of action until 2015 suffered nerve damage to his shoulder in the Leinster game at the end of November. His back-row colleague Joe Bearman also faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after injuring his hip-abductor muscle.

Lloyd Peers is the latest Osprey who faces time in the treatment room after damaging ankle ligaments during last weekend’s draw with Racing Metro at the Liberty Stadium. And Millward is unsure of how long the second-rower will be out for.

He said: “He has had a scan which confirms damage to ankle ligaments. We will now discuss with an ankle specialist the options for his treatment over the next few days before deciding what is the best one for Lloyd.”
