Davies boost for Scarlets

Scarlets scrum-half Gareth Davies has handed the West Wales side a fitness boost in their quest for success this season.

A knee injury suffered against Newport Gwent Dragons at the start of October ruled the Wales international out of six PRO12 fixture and the opening four rounds of the Champions Cup. It has been a long road back for Davies, but he starred in Llanelli RFC’s big win over Bridgend two weeks ago before making his regional return off the bench in last week’s win over the Ospreys.

He will take his place amongst the replacements for tonight’s PRO12 clash at Glasgow Warriors and is primed for a European return at Welford Road against Leicester Tigers on Friday 16 December.

Davies will get the chance to reassert his Wales credentials when he comes up against England and Tigers scrum-half Ben Youngs. He looked set to win a place in Warren Gatland’s squad for the November internationals after scoring four tries in three matches – but his progress was stopped by his untimely setback.

Davies said:  “It’s been a long three months. It’s nice to get back and hopefully get some more game time in the next few weeks. The boys are feeling positive, our confidence is up and so hopefully we can get the win.

“We can’t afford to slip up. We need to cement our place in the top six and we’re still targeting the top four.”

Wayne Pivac’s side are pushing for a top six place in the Guiness PRO12. They are currently four points off the European Rugby Champions Cup qualifying positions, with Connacht ahead of them in the race. They have eight points from their four matches in this season’s competition after they turned the tables on Ulster at Parc Y Scarlets a week after a Kingspan Stadium defeat.

They have the chance to put some distance between themselves and Leicester next week before they put their unbeaten home record on the line against RC Toulon.

And Davies is hoping a victory at Glasgow can take them back into Champions Cup action on a high.

He said: ”It’s a massive game for us. We needed that [the victory over Ospreys] to get a bit of confidence before a big few weeks ahead.”
