The Opsreys’ outside half kicked a magnificent drop goal to ensure Wales kept their noses in front in the first half and then, like all the rest of the team, tackled his heart out to keep the Grand Slam Irish at bay.
Once again he headed the tackle count for the back division with 19, although that was only just under half the number made in the game by lock Luke Charteris (37) as Wales put in nearly three times as many tackles (289-104) as their visitors in order to take the 23-16 win.
“It was almost as though it wasn’t a winning dressing room after the game because the boys put so much effort in. We were all pretty knackered,” said Biggar.
“But the camp is hugely satisfied with that victory and when we analyse it, the fight and the spirit we showed will be clear for everybody to see. Now we’ve given ourselves a fighting chance to go out to Rome and win the title again.
“If we can win it, from everybody writing us off that first weekend, it will be one of this team’s best achievements.”
Victory over reigning champions Ireland left Wales in third place after the penultimate weekend and needing to chase a hat full of points against Italy in Rome this weekend. England, who host France at Twickenham Stadium, top the table with six points and a points difference of +37.
Ireland, who have to go to Murrayfield to face a Scottish team who have yet to win in the Championship, have six points and a points difference of +33. Wales are third with six points and a points difference of +12.
“Hopefully, we can win in Italy and other results will go our way – maybe Scotland can do us a favour at home to Ireland and France against England at Twickenham,” said Biggar.
“We know we have to score some points in Italy, but it’s all on. The win over the Irish has given us a chance of the title.
“We knew Ireland were going to come back and have their moments, although we didn’t think they would have so many. We probably gave Ireland a couple of soft penalties and just allowed them to stick in the game.
“Our defence was excellent but we conceded some penalties which allowed them some territory and shots at goal. Otherwise, we couldn’t have asked for much more, it was a huge performance from everybody.”
