The 6ft 6in flyer helped the Blues to their last-gap 18-17 triumph at the BT Sport Arms Park on Friday night. Joaquin Tuculet was the hero for the Blues with the winning score seven minutes into added on time.
And Chief thinks Cuthbert will prove to still be a key-man for Wales. He said: “The more Alex has the ball in his hand the more potent you are as an attack. There are work-ons, like any player, but he is a big powerful lad, he has pace to burn and he knows how to break down defences and defensive lines.
“He has a huge appetite for the game. People think he has come back to us from Wales with his bottom lip on the ground but that is definitely not the case.
“Johnsey (Paul John) asked him about his state of mind and he wanted to play, he wanted to get on that field as soon as possible. He played some good rugby against Connacht so good on him.”
Tuculet’s try at the death meant the Blues were still trailing, but Rhys Patchell held his to kick Cardiff Blues to a narrow 18-17 victory over Pat Lam’s men for their first PRO12 victory over an Irish province this season.
Connacht had stormed to a 10-3 lead at the break but the Blues fought-back into the ascendancy with a try from Tuculet before Patchell notched a penalty. But their efforts looked to have counted for nothing when Aly Muldowney touched down with ten minutes remaining. But with Connacht a man down, Tuculet pounced to score before Patchell sealed the triumph.
