The victory was sealed when wing Elliott Keep and flanker Rhys Stephens scored two late, second half tries on Saturday, securing a convincing 27-18 victory against Rhiwbina Squirrels.
Despite a valiant effort from the Squirrels who led for most of the game, it wasn’t enough to keep the hungry Penallta from success. The league winners will now go on to face the winners of Division One East Central, in a play-off to determine who is promoted to the Championship.
Penallta Head Coach Mathew Tucker was pleased with the performance on the day. He said: “Winning the league was one of our main goals this season and it’s great to have achieved that so early. The boys really upped their game to bring the title home, and full credit to them. Hopefully we can now go on to achieve promotion.”
WRU Board member Ray Wilton said: “A big congratulations to Penallta, they have been excellent over the course of the season and won 17 of their 18 league games so far. Many of their players have come through from the club’s WRU’s Youth Cup winning side, who are also through to the WRU Youth knock-out cup final. I’m wishing them both every success.”
SSE SWALEC is the national community partner of the Welsh Rugby Union and sponsors both the SSE SWALEC Leagues and SSE SWALEC Cup, Plate and Bowl competitions.
Colin Banks, Acting Head of Sponsorship at SSE SWALEC, added: “Our strong partnership with the WRU and its clubs goes back a number of years and we’re very pleased to be doing more for grassroots rugby in Wales through our sponsorship of the SSE SWALEC Leagues. It has been another strong season for Welsh rugby as a whole and we have seen some impressive performances at club level.
“Many congratulations to Penallta on claiming the title.”
