Wales unchanged for Sevens finale

Wales Sevens head coach Gareth Williams has named an unchanged squad for this weekend’s final round of this year’s HSBC Sevens World Series in London.

Buoyed by success in Scotland last weekend, where Wales picked up the Bowl title going through the second day of action unbeaten, Williams’ squad won’t be able to rest on their laurels as they face two of the giants in pool play.

New Zealand, currently third in the overall rankings, and Australia (5th) pose major obstacles while Japan have proved a thorn in the side of several higher ranked teams this season.

The All Blacks are still in the hunt for overall honours while Australia are duelling with England to gain the fourth and final remaining automatic Olympic spot, which will be determined at Twickenham.

“We have had a decent week in London, the boys have recovered well from the Scotland tournament and preparation has built up nicely,” said Williams.

“It is an exciting group to prepare for, but we are just concerning ourselves with what has been effective for us in the last few tournaments. Being critical, our aim is to be more clinical with the possession we are getting.

“We are creating chances with some accurate execution, but we need to sharpen up in completing those chances. This was a key aspect of our match against Scotland which resulted in us letting the lead slip in the last minute of the game.

“The boys are in good spirits and are excited by the challenges New Zealand, Australia, and Japan will pose.”
