Wales out to improve ranking

The Wales Women’s Sevens squad heads for the first leg of the Rugby Europe Grand Prix Series determined to improve their current ranking of ninth in Europe.

The first leg will be staged in Kazan, Russia this weekend to be followed up by the second leg in Malemort, France next weekend.

Coach Rhys Edwards’ side claimed the Bowl in both legs last year in Moscow and Brive to gain their current ranking and he is targeting a top eight finish in both legs this campaign – pushing for the Plate competition (5th-8th).

To achieve this, the players know Wales will need to perform consistently on Day 1, where they play Netherlands, England and Germany with the top two teams going through.

Edwards said: “The Amsterdam 7s, which we competed in a couple of weeks ago, has given the players two-day tournament experience where they narrowly lost to Ireland in the semi-finals 19-14.”

Seven players will be tasting their first official piece of international sevens action although Jasmine Joyce and Keira Bevan represented Wales in Dubai last year.

Ffion Bowen and Melissa Clay have Six Nations experience behind them while ex-footballer Rhian Nokes and Beth Dainton have come through the regional system and Caernarfon’s Jess Kavanagh has been selected having come through the North Wales Talent Identification programme.
