Fishguard and Goodwick are a club that is over 100 years old, however the clubhouse is only just coming of age.
The club committee in 1997 bought a closed down and in need of refurbishment pub, with the vision of it becoming not just a base for the club, but the centre of the community. As a way of celebrating the success of the clubhouse, the club are inviting everybody to a celebration family fun day.
In the build-up to the birthday, Fishguard and Goodwick can be found at their annual stall in carnival field on the 29th August, where bouncy castles, rugby challenges and the club float can all be enjoyed before the big birthday.
After all the excitement of the carnival and birthday fun day, the club are also hosting a Join the Beat registration day on the 13th September. This is a great chance to come down and see what opportunities there are to become a part of the growing club, both off and on the field.
“We had been part of the Fishguard & Goodwick complex along with five other organisations. There was a growing feeling at the time that we were putting a lot of energy in to its running for very small reward. Our profit for 1994-95-96 was less than £100 annually. There were several discussions, and not everyone in favour, but a decision was made to look for our own club,” explained Ieuan Davies.
“The sailors return, the town centre pub with a public carpark at the rear which had closed due to a bereavement, became vacant and was to be sold by auction, we had £20,000 approximately on deposit and three plots of land which had been gifted to the club many years previously by the late Mr Bryn Luke. These were sold and yielded the club some £43,000 with the addition of a bank overdraft acidity we purchased and made a number of alterations and renovations to a total cost of £78,000.
“We opened in September 12 1996. It proved a huge success immediately and in less than two years we had no liabilities. It was officially opened by WRU district representative Mr Johnny Jones in August 27th 1997.”
