It means the game between Australia, who lead Pool A thanks to a better points difference of 39, and Wales at Twickenham this weekend will determine which side tops what has been nicknamed the ‘Pool of Death’.  Both teams are unbeaten after three matches.

Australian outside half Bernard Foley scored a record 28 points for his country against England to spearhead the victory march. His two first-half tries put his side well in control and he didn’t miss a kick all night.

It is the first time the host nation has failed to reach the knock-out phase of their own tournament and the first time that England have failed to reach the last eight. Anthony Watson scored a second half try and Owen Farrell, who picked up a yellow card in the second half for an early, no arms tackle, kicked two penalties ad a conversion for the home side.

The only other points for the Aussies came in the dying moments with a try from Matt Giteau.
