The World Cup hero kicked 20 points to steer his side to a 25-13 victory in Pool 2 before picking up the Heineken Man of the Match award – despite missing three kicks at goal and a snap drop goal.
But his overall game management enabled the Ospreys to overturn a 10-9 interval deficit and notch only their second win in their last 15 European matches. Next up for the Ospreys are last season’s Champions Cup runners-up, ASM Clermont Auvergne.
“We have to take a huge amount of credit as a team for that performance, especially as the outside half missed a few kicks. It was good to come away against such a strong outfit as Exeter Chiefs with a 4-0 points win,” said Biggar.
“We haven’t had the results we wanted in the league and so we said that this is a new competition. This win shows how much this competition means to us because we haven’t done very well in it in recent years.
“There was a lot of courage, fight and determination out there. It was one of the best performances I’ve had in an Ospreys shirt.”
Even though he kicked 20 points on the night to hoist his European tally to 441 points in 44 games, Biggar missed two penalty shots that would have given the Ospreys the lead in the first half and then hit the upright with a third after the break. He also missed with a drop goal from point blank range in the first half before giving his side the edge with a successful second half shot.
“A couple of years ago I might have let those misses affect me, but you can’t let anything get to you – once it’s gone, it’s gone,” he added.
