Two changes for Wales Sevens

Wales have made two changes to the squad from Dubai for this weekend’s second round of the HSBC Sevens World Series event in Cape Town.

Former Sevens captain Adam Thomas and Bedwas back row James Benjamin come in for Luke Crocker and Lloyd Evans as Wales prepare to face in-form USA, Australia and Portugal tomorrow in Pool C.

Wales had an indifferent start to the campaign in Dubai last week, failing to reach the knockout stages after defeats to England and Australia.

Luke Treharne then led his side to consecutive victories against Kenya in the final pool game of day one and a convincing win against Canada in their opening game against Canada on day two in the Bowl quarter-finals but basic mistakes proved costly in the semi-final where Scotland edged a nail-biter to ensure Wales left the opening round with only five points.

The opening round in Dubai saw a number of casualties with Bowl winners France the only team to name the same side for a second week in a row.

Wales Sevens head coach Gareth Williams said he was delighted to be able to bring back a player of Thomas’ experience and he was confident Benjamin would also slot in well.

“There were a lot of positives to come out of last week’s opening round in Dubai,” said Williams. “We’ve got a young group together who are keen to learn and progress. We’ve identified a few areas to target going into pool play – if we focus on them then I’m sure we can obtain some positive results.”
