The old enemies setup a winner takes all clash at Rugby HQ after both sides held on to their unbeaten records last weekend. Wales’ 19-10 defeat of France saw them rise above Les Bleus, before England’s defeat of Ireland sent the Red Rose to the summit of the Six Nations standings.
Wales would be in pole position to lift a third title in five years if they can repeat their Rugby World Cup heroics at Twickenham. And Davies, who’s kick ahead setup George North’s vital score at the weekend, reckons the men in red are getting better and better.
He said: “England have got the wins on the board. We have got to back ourselves. We have got confidence in our own abilities, and traditionally we get better as the tournament goes on. We have to make sure we keep doing that and keep working hard.
“We are never as clinical as we want to be, so we need to keep working on that, but our defence was excellent. We came through a six-minute period of pressure without conceding a point, which is encouraging.
“It is about using the ball effectively and being clinical when we have it offensively. There is a lot more to come in that area. We created some chances, but we were loose with some silly off-loads, but that will come.”
North’s 25th try for his country proved decisive, even if the opportunity nearly went awry. Davies’ intelligent kick downfield had sent North haring clear of the cover with the ball just yards from the line.
Northampton Saints star North attempted to dribble the ball forward but ended up taking an air shot. Fortunately, the chasing French fly-half Jules Plisson kicked the ball straight back to the Welshman, who crashed over.
“I don’t think there is any danger of George playing for Manchester United, that was a bit more like Carmarthen Town,” joked the centre, who is returning to the Scarlets at the end of the season.
“He was fortunate with the bounce and he did well to finish it in the end. Sometimes those things go against you and sometimes they go for you and thankfully it went for us in this game and we are still unbeaten.
“It is never a bad thing to have those little bits of luck go your way and hopefully we can make the most of it.”
