Their 25-10 away win included three tries and 15 points from outside half Ben Grzicka as they not only took four points, but crucially stopped the home side picking up any at all. It was Bedlinog’s 11th straight win n the league after losing their opening day game at Rhydyflein, 15-13.
There may have been wins for table-topping Ynysybwl, 29-10 at home against Brecon, and third placed Brynmawr, 19-12 at home against Rhydyfelin, but Bedlinog have five games in hand over the three teams ahead of them. The only thing that looks capable of stopping their drive for promotion is fixture congestion.
They are still involved in the SSE Swalec Plate and the Glamorgan Silver Ball. They meet Swansea Uplands in the last eight of the Silver Ball this week and have a Plate quarter-final at Ynysybwl to look forward to if they can beat Division 1 East Central leaders Glamorgan Wanderers.
Their run in the Mid District Cup came to an end in the quarter-finals when they were beaten by Ystrad Rhondda, but the Foxes are on the scent of more silverware having been crowned champions of Division 6 East in 2000, Division 4 South-East in 2007 and Division 3 South-East in 2008. They were runners-up in Division 2 South-East in 2009.
Among their 10 remaining fixtures they have matches against the bottom-three clubs in the division and still have to host Ynysybwl, who are currently seven points clear at the top of the table and have a 21 point cushion over Bedlinog, who have played five fewer matches.
In Division 1 East Central it was St Joseph’s who claimed the Cardiff bragging rights by beating Cardiff Quins 26-12. The home side crossed on half-time and never lost the lead after that, helping them to stay in touch with Glamorgan Wanderers at the top of the table.
The Wanderers struggled to pick up their bonus-point in a 37-10 win at Llantwit Fardre, but have now won 12 of their 13 fixtures and lead St Joes by four points with four games in hand. They have what could be two title deciding matches at the end of April when they host St Joseph’s and then travel to third placed Ystrad Rhondda.
Nant Conwy extended their lead in Division 1 North with a 27-13 away win over Caernarfon. Dylan Jones was key to Nant’s win, crossing for a try, slotting a drop goal and converting twice for a match tally of 12 points.
They are now 19 points clear of Pwllheli at the top of the table with six games left to play, although Pwllheli, who beat Llangefni 32-17, have three games in hand and are due to host the league leaders on 16 April. Third placed Bala suffered a shock 9-6 defeat at basement side Dolgellau, while Bethesda’s 40-17 home win over Abergele allowed them to leap-frog Caernarfon into third place.
Skewen continued their blazing run of form in Division 1 West Central by beating bottom side Tondu 40-3. And with second-place Ammanford, who have three games in hand on the leaders, only securing a 28-28 draw at Seven Sisters it meant their lead at the top extended to 20 points.
Only Trebanos have been able to lower Skewen’s colours in the league this season and they have won 10 games in a row in all competition since then. Ammanford got within five points, 11-6, when they travelled to face the league leaders on 14 November and they will have home advantage this weekend when the top two teams clash again.
Felinfoel’s title challenge in Division 1 West took a severe dent as they were beaten 18-13 by bottom-but-one Loughor. That allowed third placed Kidwelly to close the gap between the two clubs to six points, with Kidwelly having a game in hand after their 24-0 home win over Llangennech.
Home full back Gareth Rees scored 14 of the Kidwelly points as he ran in one of their three tries and kicked nine points. The other tries came from Ciaran Guest and Declan Knox.
