Bedwas won’t fear Ponty in Foster’s final

Bedwas head coach Steve Law has told his team to play with ‘no fear’ when they attempt to win their first major trophy when they meet Pontypridd in the inaugural final of the Foster’s Challenge Cup at the Bridgend Ford Brewery Field on Saturday (2.30pm kick-off).

The Bridge Field side notched a famous 22-8 home win over reigning Principality Premiership champions Pontypridd when they last met and so the underdogs should be able to go into one of the biggest games in their history confident of causing an upset.

Ponty have been there, done it all and got the T-Shirt over and over again on the big occasions in the past, but they have felt the heat a bit more this season in what has turned into one of the most competitive Premiership seasons on record.

And they needed to go into extra-time to beat Cardiff in the semi-finals to secure their ticket to the Brewery Field this weekend. Bedwas won six and drew one of their pool matches and then overpowered Carmarthen Quins in the semi-finals, winning 48-20.

“We know that there is a big challenge ahead of us. Ponty will start as heavy favourites because they are still fighting in every competition and have a formidable record,” admitted Law to the South Wales Argus.

“But I won’t need to motivate the players and we will go into the game with confidence and energy. The boys can’t wait – we respect Pontypridd, but don’t fear them.

“This is really big for the club. We have come close a few times in the past, but have never been in a final.”

Bedwas will have former Wales wing Aled Brew lining-up in their back division and have former Wales Under 20 lock Joe Davies at the heart of their pack. But Law turned down the chance to draft in up to six Dragons players, although will have former club captain James Thomas in their back row

Ponty have made four changes to the starting line-up that notched a 46-20 home win over Neath in their last weekend. Lewis Williams comes in on the wing, Ceri Sweeney and Joel Raikes pair up again at half-back and Wales Under 20 Grand Slam prop Corey Domachowski returns on the loose head.

Another of the highly successful Wales Under 20 side, centre Harri Millard, partners skipper Dafydd Lockyer at centre.
