A converted try at the death got Fiji out of jail against Canada but their 19-17 win currently places them second in the pool behind Luke Treharne’s Wales side, who defeated Korea 40-14.
South Korea proved stubborn opposition for Wales but a composed performance saw them record a comfortable victory with six players crossing the whitewash to illustrate the team’s all round display.
Kristian Phillips looked particularly sharp, scoring the first try before setting up winger Luke Morgan for his 56th touchdown in the World Series.
Sam Cross, in his 100th match on the circuit, shrugged off a high tackle to put Wales in command at the break with a 21-7 lead.
Owen Jenkins jinked his way over straight after halftime before Jordan Williams put his name on the score sheet. Korea hit back when captain Kim Hyun-soo barrelled his way over. However, a try from Tom Isaacs gave Wales the final say.
Wales head coach Gareth Williams was keeping his feet on the ground after a composed performance.
“It was a pleasing first display against a very physical South Korea but I was disappointed with the two tries we conceded but the boys responded well to control the game.
“We now face an exciting challenge tomorrow against Canada. The recent games against them have been hugely competitive, and we expect nothing less from a team that boast the most Tournament Caps of any team in Hong Kong this week. They were superb against Fiji tonight, and we are excited at the prospect of renewing what is becoming a regular fixture on this year’s Series.
“I am sure it will be a fantastic occasion to start the day for us before our attention turns to Fiji later in the day.”
