Pwllheli have a four game back log of matches to make-up on the table-toppers, but they can reach a maximum of 94 points if they win each of their six remaining fixtures with a bonus-point. Nant have two games left to go and can each 96 points.
To reach that target, and win a third Division 1 North title, Nant will need to end Pwllheli’s 10 match unbeaten home run in the league and then go to Bethesda to seal the deal. Nant have been a model of consistency in Division 1 North with titles in 2013 and 2010, runners-up spots in 2015, 2012, 2011 and 2010 and they were also runners-up in the old Division 4 North in 2009.
Pwllheli won the title with 92 points last season, going through the season unbeaten at home, and did the double over Nant, winning 12-10 at home and 16-10 away. When the two teams met earlier in this campaign the game ended up as a 17-17 draw.
Pwllheli’s five remaining games after this weekend are all away from home – Bethesda, Mold, Llandudno, Bala and Dolgellau – and their chase to retain their title might well be a forlorn one if they get beaten at home this weekend. They finished second in 2013 and 2014.
The title race in Division 1 East is a three-way battle with Penallta, Ynysybwl and Bedlinog all chasing promotion into the Championship. Penallta currently lead the way by a point from Ynysybwl, but third placed Bedlinog have three games in hand on the top two and are only three points behind the leaders having only lost once this season.
With Penallta playing Division 1 West leaders Skewen in the quarter-finals of the SSE Swalec Plate this weekend they are likely to lose their grip on the top spot. Ynysybwl head to Blaenavon this weekend, while Bedlinog go to Senghenydd.
Glamorgan Wanderers, who hold a 15 point lead at the top of Division 1 East Central, travel to fifth placed Rumney on Friday night seeking a 16th league win in 17 outings, while second placed Ystrad Rhondda travel to Treorchy.
