Matthew Brewer showed nerves of steel to convert a match-winning penalty at the death to condemn the runaway leaders of Division 1 West Central to only their second defeat of the season. Skewen took the lead with an early penalty, but their lead did not last long.
Penallta back row man Rhys Fitzgerald crashed over with Brewer adding the extras for a 7-3 lead. And it looked like the hosts were cruising towards the home of Welsh rugby when centre Andrew Jenkins beat his man to dive over.
It got even worse for Skewen when they allowed Jenkins to burst through and score his second of the game for a 21-6 half-time advantage. But the west Walians hit-back after the break and scrum-half James Ball darted over to add to penalties from Anthony Buselli.
The game was then levelled at 21-all when wing Mark Harvey raced over to score. But Brewer kept his cool in the final throws to strike his penalty clean through the posts and book a final clash against Bedlinog, who had beaten Cwmllynfell 38-10 the previous weekend.
Taffs Well stretched their unbeaten record this season in league and cup to 18 games as they overcame last season’s Bowl runners-up, Cambrian Welfare, 14-11 to book their place in the final. Sean Baggs landed three penalties before Cambrian full-back Simon Warren broke away to score.
But Taffs Well snatched it with a Dafydd Close try five minutes from time. They will play Burry Port in the final after they scored a last minute try to seal a 29-27 triumph over Aberdare.
