Eight former internationals will cycle 176 miles from Parc Eirias to Principality Stadium to raise money for the players who have been seriously injured playing the game they love.

The Charitable Trust Cycle Ride set off from Colwyn Bay at 8am on Saturday and is due to arrive in Cardiff on Sunday afternoon.

Former Wales and Ospreys captain Ryan Jones is among those to tackle the route from the home of the U20s in North Wales to the national stadium in Cardiff.

The WRU Head of Participation will be joined by colleagues new and old including Wales’ assistant coaches Robin McBryde (forwards) and Huw Bennett (strength and conditioning).

Others famous for their studded boots who will be sporting pedal cleats this weekend include Colin Charvis, Alix Popham, Les Keen, Tony Copsey and Aled Williams.

Also getting on their bikes are WRU Board Members Ian Jeffery and Anthony Buchanan as well as WRU employees, Friends of the Trust including Llandovery RFC Chairman Handel Davies, and members of Brecon RFC.

Providing much needed support in the way of hospitality, Builth Wells RFC will open their doors to the cyclists to provide dinner and entertainment after today’s 104-mile course.

Brecon RFC will host a lunch tomorrow (Sunday), before the riders tackle the remaining route to the iconic Principality Stadium. Additionally, WRU partners Peter’s Foods and Princes Gate will provide sustenance along the way.

“The rugby family has once again showed tremendous support for the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust which helps to generate much-needed funding for those who have suffered catastrophic rugby injuries, ” said WRU President and Chairman of the Trust Dennis Gethin, who will be showing moral support at the Builth and Brecon pit-stops.

“Men and women of all ages and rugby backgrounds are supporting the ride from Parc Eirias to Principality Stadium, with players from Brecon RFC to Wales’ former captains Ryan Jones and Colin Charvis getting on their bikes as well as WRU Board Members, employees and Friends of the Trust.

“On behalf of the Trust and the Welsh Rugby Union, I am grateful to the individuals and organisations who have pulled together by donating sponsorship money, providing logistical provision and helping to promote the event.

“I’d like to thank Sarn Helen Cycles, Uprise Marketing, Ted Hopkins and Hydro, our friends at Brecon and Builth Wells and everyone who has made this worthy and fundraiser possible. The camaraderie shown so far bodes very well indeed for an enjoyable yet challenging weekend for the riders and I wish everyone the best of luck.”
