Tandy happy as Ospreys start pre-season with victory

Ospreys head coach Steve Tandy felt there were plenty of positives to take after watching his side kick-off their pre-season preparations with a 26-21 victory over Leicester Tigers at the Liberty Stadium.

The hosts had to recover from conceding two early tries to come out on top against last season’s Aviva Premiership semi-finalists, but showed good character as Sam Parry, Josh Matavesi, Dafydd Howells and Ben John all went over for tries, with Sam Davies adding three conversions.

The Welsh region are striving to improve on last season’s disappointing eighth-place finish in the Guinness Pro12, and secured victory without the bulk of their Wales internationals.

“It was only a pre-season game but we pulled up pretty well through that, there were some big efforts as we are a bit thin on the ground at the minute,” said Tandy.

“I thought we did some good work around the shape Brad Davis has been doing on our defence and there were some real positive signs we are understanding the system and there were some good attacking moments.

“We controlled a lot of the play and scored some decent tries. It was pleasing, there is plenty to work on and we know no-one remembers who wins and loses pre-season games but we can enjoy it move on.”

The Ospreys now travel to Belgium for the next phase of their build-up to the new campaign and will face the Belgium national team on Friday, August 19.

“We haven’t been away together for a long time. It was the World Cup last year and we didn’t see some of our players for a long time because of their injuries,” said Tandy.

“The year we got to the semi-finals of the Pro12 we had the group together for a long period so it will be good.

“We have a chance to relax and there’ll be evenings we can do things together as a squad. Alun Wyn Joneswill be coming with us, we’ll also have Scott Baldwin, James King and Rhys Webb – who has started training in the last week. With Alun Wyn coming, the young boys will see how world-class players live their lives.”
