The 17-8 triumph got the West Walians back to winning ways after starting the season with three straight defeats. Patchell was instrumental in the Parc Y Scarlets victory, as his pair of conversions and late drop-goal kept Connacht at arm’s length. And he hopes his new side can climb up the table after getting that all-important first win.
He said: “It was a big relief to get the victory. We just needed to win one more than anything. Now that we have won our first game we’ll hopefully see the confidence return.
“It wasn’t pretty on occasions but we felt that we controlled the territory quite well and put Connacht under enough pressure for them to crack. We’ve lost three before today [Saturday] but we have been away to Kingspan Stadium and that isn’t an easy place to go. We’ve won the first one now
and hopefully we can build on it.”
Wales full-back Liam Williams burst back onto the scene with two tries in a scintillating performance. His first came after some telepathic handling between brothers James and Jonathan Davies, before he squirmed in at the corner to clinch the victory.
Up next for Wayne Pivac’s side is a trip to Benetton Treviso. The Italian side overcame the Newport Gwent Dragons at home last time out, and will be looking to add another Welsh scalp to their collection. And Patchell knows his men will not be in for an easy ride after Treviso also bagged their first win of the season.
Patchell continued: ”They secured a brilliant win over the Dragons last night [Friday]. We’ll be in Monday and will build on this result and see how we go.”
