Patchell ready to face “impressive” Farrell

Rhys Patchell is looking forward to locking horns with Owen Farrell but insists the Scarlets European Rugby Champions Cup clash with Saracens is about far more than their personal battle.

The Welsh region sit top of Pool 3 after claiming a first top-tier European win in nine game against Sale Sharks on home turf at Parc y Scarlets.

But Saracens claimed the most eye-catching result of the opening weekend by bringing an end to Toulon’s unbeaten home record in the competition on Farrell’s return from injury.

It means the defending champions are brimming with confidence as they prepare to host Wayne Pivac’s men at Allianz Park.

With players of the calibre of England fly-half Farrell, Maro Itoje, Scott Williams, Liam Williams and Schalk Burger on the field it promises to be an intriguing encounter.

Patchell, who joined the Scarlets from Cardiff Blues in the summer to play regularly at number 10, cannot wait for the challenge ahead.

“Owen Farrell is an awesome player. He is obviously a very, very good player and to have been out for the length of time he had been, and just pick up where he left off on tour with England in Australia as very impressive,” said Patchell.

“To do it straight away in a place like Stade Mayol was very impressive. He is a very good player. But I wouldn’t suggest that anybody thinks the game is a personal battle, the game is a collective, everybody wins together and everybody loses together.

“As long as you do your job, you are a cog in the machine and you are effective in that, the rest of the game takes care of itself and hopefully you come out with the right performance and result.

“We are under no illusions that Saracens have got a very good squad, it is not just a good first XV, it seems whoever they rotate in and out is comfortable within their system and roles.

“I wouldn’t necessarily say people look at the team-sheet and say, ’look, I need to get the better of him’. It is just a case of being as good as we can be in our individual roles and hopefully everything else takes care of itself.”
