Sir Gar now team to beat in U18 Development League

Coleg Sir Gar maintained their 100% record in the Cup section of the Wednesday Under 18 League as they gained ample revenge for their earlier defeat in qualifying by beating Gower College 33-7.

Coming on the back of their revenge mission against reigning champions Coleg y Cymoedd the previous week, the team that beat them to the title last season, it underlined their status as the team to beat this winter.

There were five tries in all for the home side from hooker Callum Jenkins, flanker Dan Davies, wing Aled Rees and replacements Cameron Lewis and Cameron Collins and centre Scott Lloyd kicked four conversion. Gower’s points came from centre Callum Carson’s fifth try of the campaign and a James Eynon conversion.

“The boys are getting better and better each week and the way things are shaping up we could meet Cymoedd in the final once again. We’ve been in five of last six finals and it is 2-2 between us and Cymoedd,” said Sir Gar head coach Euros Evans.

“We were very good without the ball when we met them last week, but not so good with it. This week we were better with the ball and scored five good tries.

“We lost to Gower College earlier in the season, but we were a bit light then because we had a game against Millfield at Parc y Scarlets a few days later. This time we were almost at full strength and it was a good win.

“They have been playing well this season and in Callum Carson they have a player that you will pay to go and watch. He is a beautifully balanced runner and is playing some great rugby.

“We’ve got a good pack this year and there is a level of expectation building up around this side. Because of Sir Gar’s reputation in this tournament there is always a pressure to perform.”

Scarlets Academy and Wales Under 18 cap Ryan Conbeer has yet to play for Sir Gar this season, but he will add potency to the back line with the unflappable Lloyd inside him and the talented Harri Doel at full back. But it is up front where the power lies.

“We’ve got some good props in Llyr Green and Adam Thomas, who played for Wales U16 last season, and in the back row Gethin Davies captain Wales U16. He plays alongside Dan Davies and George David,” added Evans.

“Our captain, Lewis Ellis-Jones, is doing a great job in the second row, but his long term future is probably as a No 6. The team is shaping up nicely and we are going all out to regain the title this season.”

Cymoedd made up for their defeat down west with a 38-22 win at Sardis Road over Cardiff & Vale College in a highly competitive and attractive fixture, while Cowbridge CS ran out 32-19 victors’ against Pembrokeshire College.

There were seven tries in the game, with Cowbridge edging their hosts 4-3, but the boot of outside half Cai Evans kept the gap in favour of the visitors as he landed three conversions and two penalties for a vital mach tally of 12 points.

Home skipper and No 8 Osian Davies scored two tries and the other Pembrokeshire touchdown came from centre Alex Varney. Llew Jones added a conversion, while the Cowbridge tries came from full back Evans Williams, hooker Will Bryant, replacement centre Harrison Ashby and wing Max Cunningham.

In the Trophy tournament, Coleg Llandrillo raced into a 22 point lead at Parc Eirias against Bridgend College with tries from wing Elis Roberts, centre Rhys Henderson, scrum half Iago Davies and No 8 Conor Hinchcliffe. The visitors then picked up a try from wing Sam Palmer, but the north Walians replied with three ore tries, two of which wing Bailey Rae scored.

Newport HS stripped Glantaf of their unbeaten record as they ran out 29-17 winners at home. James McCarthy was the Newport hero as the left wing bagged a hat-trick of tries.
