Cardiff Blues head coach Danny Wilson has urged his men to punish their opponents if they are to get back to winning ways.

The Blues saw their 100 percent record fall last weekend when they suffered an agonising 16-13 defeat to Leinster at the BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park. Wilson’s men led 13-3 at half-time thanks to Gareth Anscombe, who racked up a converted try and a pair of penalties but Leinster fought back in the second-half.

But missed opportunities and lapses in their discipline allowed Johnny Sexton to haul Leinster back into it before Rhys Ruddock crashed over. And a late penalty allowed the Leinstermen to snatch the win at the death. And Wilson wants his men to be more clinical ahead of their derby clash at the Ospreys this weekend.

He said: “We created enough opportunities to win it, but we didn’t finish them off. That’s something we need to look at. We felt a number of decisions went against us tonight, but we needed to finish some of the opportunities we created. That’s a disappointment.

“I still think we are where we need to be in terms of performance and there is plenty of desire and hunger there. This came down to our lack of finishing ability.

“We are disappointed and frustrated. But there are enough positive messages to come out of what was a very narrow loss. The fact we are very disappointed to lose a game that we had chances to win against a side like Leinster shows how far we have come.

“We’ve got a big derby match coming up against the Ospreys this week. It doesn’t get a bigger challenge that having to go and play the Ospreys there. It’s an exciting prospect. They are a very good side. They are well coached and have a big squad of players. A big challenge at their place. We want to win the derbies.”
