The victory made it five out of five for last season’s runners-up and ensured they made it through to the final for the seventh year in a row. Having already beaten arch-rivals Coleg y Cymoedd at home this season they will feel confident of wrestling the trophy from them this season.
While Sir Gar were running in five tries against a very capable Cowbridge side – it took them an hour to hit the front – Cymoedd moved to the brink of another final with a massive 87-24 win over Gwent College. Sir Gar head to Gwent College for their final game next week, while Cymoedd will set up a fifth final in a row against their Llanelli-based rivals if they can beat Pembrokeshire College at home.
Llandovery College made it three wins in a row in the Trophy tournament with a 36-24 triumph over previously unbeaten Newport HS. There were 10 tries all-tolled in a wonderful game of attacking rugby, with the home side bagging six of them.
Centre Rhodri Bullock gave Llandovery a quickfire start with a try within 43 second of the kick off that Dan Wainwright converted. Things got even better for the home team when full back Tim Lewis crossed to make it 12-0 in as many minutes.
But Newport worked their way back into a thrilling contest and came storming back with three tries. No 8 Lennon Greggains got the first, scrum half Dan Babos struck for the second and wing James McCarthy converted the latter before crossing himself to make it 17-12 to the visitors.
Stung into action, Llandovery replied with three tries of their own as flanker JJ Muller, Lewis again and finally No 8 Dylan Jones crossed the Newport line. Wainwright converted two of them to stretch the home advantage to 36-17.
Newport had the final word with a second try from McCarthy, which the wing also converted, but they couldn’t close the gap in time to hold onto their unbeaten record.
Llandovery, who have 16 points, host bottom of the table Bridgend College next week, while Newport HS have to travel to Neath & Port Talbot College to decide who will face Ysgol Glantaf in the Trophy final next month.
Neath & Port Talbot College scored five tries in a routine 33-3 win at Whitchurch HS. The only points for the home side came from the boot of outside half Conor Nagle, while his opposite number Luke Scully helped himself to a try and four conversions for a match tally of 13 points.
Wing Kyle Jones ran in two tries and other scores came from wing Dewi Cross and prop Rhys Williams.
