Ospreys PS XV win at last

Ospreys Premiership Select XV were the only regional side to win at the weekend as they beat Connacht Eagles 20-17 in a dramatic British & Irish Cup fixture that earned them their first victory.

Aberavon wing Jay Baker ran in a hat-trick of tries, including the match winner with the penultimate play of an enthralling encounter in Galway. Matthew Aubrey put Ospreys within a try of winning when he slotted a penalty 10 minutes from time to make it 17-15 before Baker stole the show as he completed his three try feat  with a blitzing surge to the corner.

But there were setbacks for the Scarlets, Blues and Dragons as all three fell to defeats. Scarlets were hammered 65-13 by Leinster A at Donnybrook Stadium in Pool 4.

Dai Flanagan’s side were going after their third straight win in the competition after victories over Nottingham and Richmond, but came undone to the rampant Irish who cruised to victory courtesy of braces from Tom Daly and Jordan Larmour. Josh MacLeod and Tom Williams crossed for tries for the Scarlets with Billy McBryde adding a solitary penalty.

The Blues Premiership Select XV lost out to Ulster on Friday night as they were downed 16-10 with the boot of Jonny McPhillips proving the difference as he scored 11 points. Merthyr wing Kyle Evans scored the Blues’ try in the first-half, but Jack Owen’s effort after the break secured the Irish win.

The Dragons remain at the bottom of Pool 5 after a spirited 20-17 loss to Yorkshire Carnegie, the English side currently 2nd in the Championship. But a courageous display from the Men of Gwent saw them run them close.

James Benjamin scored two tries and put the Welsh in front with his opener early on before Yorkshire came marching back to lead 17-5 at half-time. Benjamin found his second with five minutes to go before Yorkshire scored a penalty. Henri Williams added a score in the dying seconds, but it was too little, too late for a dramatic comeback win.
