Hong Kong have made history in qualifying for the tournament for the first time, and take their place as Asia/Oceania 2, joining Wales, World Cup 2014 silver medallists Canada, and the world’s number one team New Zealand in the pool.
“We’d like to congratulate Hong Kong on their fantastic achievement,” said Wales Women head coach Rowland Phillips. “Any team that qualifies for the World Cup is a force to be respected. They’ve got several full-time sevens players, which will be a great boost to their national side.”
“Whilst we know all about the challenges posed by Canada and New Zealand, Hong Kong will be a bit of an unknown quantity and they could use that to their advantage. Pool A is a truly global group, which is very exciting because that’s what the World Cup is all about.”
Wales Women will compete in one major tournament before heading to Ireland next year, with the Women’s Six Nations kicking off on Friday 3rd February. They will host two significant fixtures at home at the BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park, against England (Saturday 11th February) and Ireland (Saturday 11th March). Tickets for these games can be purchased here.Â
