Second half revival sends Sir Gâr to Cup glory

Twenty-seven unanswered second half points by Coleg Sir Gâr saw the Llanelli-based side mount an impressive comeback and stun Coleg y Cymoedd 27-23 in the WRU Wednesday League Cup final held at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park yesterday.

Coleg y Cymoedd were chasing a hat-trick of titles and, after leading 18-0 at halftime, would have been expecting to lift the trophy. However, despite failing to score a point in the opening exchanges Coleg Sir Gâr burst out of the blocks in the second half with dangerous winger Ryan Conbeer exchanging passes with full back Harri Doel to race away and score under the posts in a stunning breakout to set the tone for what was to come.

Inside centre Scott Lloyd, who was outstanding throughout in defence and attack, then exploded through the Cymoedd defence and off-loaded a delightful pass to his midfield partner Joe Roberts, who raced away to score under the posts.

Lloyd then added two penalties to put his side in front for the first time in the match at 20-18 and when winger Thomas Rogers raced away from the cover defence from halfway to score a converted try, Coleg Sir Gâr were in full control.

Cymoedd refused to throw in the towel and edged back into the contest in the dying stages when lock Callum James powered over from close range but they ran out of time as Coleg Sir Gâr managed to hold out for what had looked at half-time an unlikely victory.

Cymoedd fly half Rhys Morgan pulled the strings expertly in the first half, banging over two early penalties before impressive flanker Jack Perkins scored in the corner.

Morgan capped a fine first half display by slicing through the Coleg Sir Gâr defence and diving over. His conversion put his side 18-0 up at halftime in a commanding position, but Coleg Sir Gâr’s stunning fightback after the break ensured they were crowned cup champions.

In the Wednesday  League Trophy final, Newport High School had to withstand a second half onslaught from Ysgol Glantaf before prevailing 25-22.

Newport used the elements to perfection in the first half, with both wingers James McCarthy and Rio Dyer proving a real handful for the Glantaf defence.

McCarthy scored twice, the second a peach, when he collected a bouncing ball near the touchline, tip-toeing away from the whitewash and evading the cover defence. Full back Reagon Mahoney added the extras.

When scrum half Dan Babos darted over from close range, Newport were 19-0 ahead and coasting but a try by flanker Rhys Morgans gave Glantaf fresh hope as they entered halftime.

Mahoney kicked an early penalty in the second half but that seemed to wake Glantaf from their slumber and they began to cause Newport major problems.

Second row Gruff Roberts scored after centre Max Llewellyn carved through the Newport defence like a hot knife through butter. He was caught just short of the line by Corey Howells, but Glantaf recycled the ball to enable Roberts to power over.

Jake Hillman’s conversion gave Glantaf further hope as they chipped away at the lead.

Owen Jones darted over from a retreating scrum and Hillman’s excellent conversion brought Glantaf to within three points.

Glantaf threw the kitchen sink at Newport and the defence held firm until an infringement gave replacement Dafydd Manley an opportunity to level the scores – which he did to leave the outcome hanging on a knife edge.

Having done all the hard work to get themselves back in the game, Glantaf then gave away a penalty from the resulting re-start and Mahoney nailed it from long range to ensure his side some silverware from a demanding season.
