The WRU National Cup is now in its 46th season and the first final was won by Neath when they beat Cardiff in 1972. Two of the four semi-finalists, Pontypridd (six times) and Cross Keys (once), rank among the previous winners.

In fact, they met in the 2012 and 2014 finals. Neither RGC 1404 nor Merthyr have gone this far before, although The Ironmen beat Rhiwbina in the 2014 National Plate final.

In the National Plate, the game between Penallta and Nant Conwy at Newtown RFC is a repeat of the 2012 final. That was won by Penallta, 21-15, and the Pitmen were back at the Principality Stadium last year when they endured a heartbreaking 12-10 defeat against Bedlinog thanks to a last minute drop goal.

Ystalyfera, of Division 1 West Central, haven’t won a trophy since 1999 and will be hoping to beat Division 2 East side Abercarn.

In the National Bowl, Amman United will take an 18 match unbeaten run in league and cup matches into their semi-final against Cardigan. They beat reigning champions Burry Port, their closest rivals for the Division 3B West title, in the quarter-finals.

The other game sees the 2004 National Cup finalists Caerphilly meet Cilfynydd. Caerphilly are third in Division 3A East and have only been beaten twice this season, while Cilfynydd have lost three times in reaching second place in Division 3A East Central.
