Faletau – Lions can do something special

Taulupe Faletau is relishing the opportunity to fly to New Zealand with the British & Irish Lions and believes Warren Gatland’s 41-man squad can make history next month.

The Wales No 8 joined up with 13 other members of Gatland’s party at the Vale Hotel on Sunday night to begin preparations for the tour to face the All Blacks.

It was familiar surroundings for Faletau, who revealed the excitement in the squad after their first day’s training on Monday.

He said:” It has been good to get together and meet all the other boys.

“The squad is amazing, we have great talent and everyone has a good mindset. We have the potential to do well and I am very confident in the squad.

“I am looking forward to getting there, getting stuck into it and giving it a good go.”

Faletau is sharing a room with England prop Kyle Sinckler during training this week and reckons it is vital that the squad bond together quickly.

“I am rooming with Sinckler,” said Faletau. “It is good to get together here, regardless of numbers. We don’t really know each other at the moment, but Sinckler is a top guy.

“We are all here to prepare and gel together. What we learn before the other guys is only going to help the team. We will try and get everyone up and running quickly.”

Lions captain Sam Warburton and back rower Ross Moriarty were two other Wales players training at the Vale on Monday.

New Zealand could be without captain Kieran Read for the Test series after he suffered a broken thumb playing for the Crusaders in Super Rugby in April.

But opposite number Faletau insists his potential absence will not lessen the Kiwi threat.

He added: “A player like him is going to be a huge blow if he is out. New Zealand have a wealth of talent and depth, though.

“I am sure if he was not to be there, he would be missed, but his replacement would do a good job.

“But we have to focus on ourselves and we are going to have to be intense for 80 minutes to compete against them.”
