Eifion Lewis-Roberts, the St Asaph-born Welsh international prop, has been forced to retire from the professional game.

A knee injury picked up playing for Sale Sharks against Bristol last October has finally forced the 36-year-old front rower, nicknamed ‘The Fridge’ by former team mate Jason Robinson, to hang up his boots after a great career.

“It’s sad that I have had to admit defeat to this knee injury. I was enjoying my rugby, as I always did, in the game at Bristol and I made a tackle which caused the damage,” said Lewis-Roberts.

The highlight of his 11 years in the professional game would have to be the day he won his Welsh cap against Canada at the Principality Stadium back in 2008. At the time he was in the first of his two spells at Sale Sharks and a regular in the Aviva Premiership.

He also spent a year playing at Toulon, helping them to reach the European Challenge Cup final. He featured in their final defeat by Biarritz Olympique at the Twickenham Stoop in 2012 and played in 34 games for the French club.

“Eifion has been a great servant for the club and he will be remembered for the 100% effort he put into each and every game. We are delighted that he will be attending all our home games as an Ambassador of the club,” said Sale Sharks director of Rugby, Steve Diamond.
