Wales defence coach Shaun Edwards insists they will be wary of the threat posed by a dangerous Australian side when the two teams meet in their Under Armour series opener.

Warren Gatland’s men face the Wallabies – a team they haven’t beaten since 2008 – at Principality Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

“Australia are an immense attacking weapon. I would say they are the most potent attacking force in the first three phases in world rugby, probably even more than the All Blacks,” Edwards said.

“They are averaging 32 to 33 points a match in the Rugby Championship. Australia are perennially a top-four ranked team and their attack is pretty prolific. They have a multitude of excellent backs.

“Whoever they play at full-back (instead of the rested Israel Folau) will be a potent force.”

Wales have lost their last 12 games to Australia and are looking to break that hoodoo in Cardiff.

Ospreys duo Rhys Webb and Justin Tipuric are both doubts for the game with knee and thigh problems respectively.

Dan Lydiate, Aaron Shingler, Josh Navidi and Sam Cross are options for head coach Gatland to consider in the back-row, while Gareth Davies of the Scarlets could step in for Webb at scrum-half.

“We’ve got a couple of knocks on a couple of players,” said Edwards.

“Justin is carrying one and so is Rhys, so we will just wait until the last minute. The team is named on Thursday.

“They are both lower limb injuries. They will have to take part in training to put their hands up for selection. Both were on the Lions tour recently and both played very well on that tour.”

Wales face Australia, Georgia, New Zealand and South Africa on consecutive weekends as they look to build towards the 2019 World Cup.

Edwards said: “It is probably the time of a four-year cycle when you can bring new players and take a bit of a risk. The World Cup rankings are already done and dusted.

“Warren never ever takes an easy option. If you look at our fixtures since Warren took over, they have always been tough in the autumn.

“We nearly always play the likes of Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, and we are playing all three this time.

“It is certainly not a resting month, put it that way.”
