Highly respected and regarded throughout rugby circles and educational circles in Wales, his tireless contribution on behalf of schoolboy rugby in the Rhondda is legendary.
With over 60 years of active participation from coaching in his early years to being the treasurer, secretary, fixture secretary, organiser and administrator of the RSRU 200 Club and RSRU chairman for over 30 years, to becoming the President of the Rhondda Schools Rugby Union – a post he still holds today – it’s felt within the RSRU that they wouldn’t be such a thriving union without Mr Williams’ relentless input.
Many believe Rhondda Schools Rugby Union would have folded and probably amalgamated with a neighbouring union if it wasn’t for the insistence of Mr Williams and his single-mindedness in ensuring that the Rhondda would remain as one of the districts of schoolboy rugby in Wales.
As well as his lengthy service on a local level, he has also been involved on a regional and national level as well. Regionally he has been involved in organising schoolboy rugby where he was chairman of Mid Glamorgan Schools Rugby Union for more than a decade.
On a national level he was a member of the WSRU Intermediate Group Executive committee for over 20 years, being chairman of the group in 1981/82.
Furthermore he was a member of the WSRU Council responsible for all junior, intermediate and senior schoolboy rugby in Wales for many years and was the treasurer of the WSRU Council from1986/1990.
“His contribution to the development of so many talented young rugby players over so many years is immeasurable and a remarkable record of unselfish dedication and a lifetime of commitment to the welfare of young people in our valleys,” a WSRU spokesperson said.
