“Harri has been around the squad for a few months now,” said head coach Gareth Williams of the 2016 Wales U20 Grand Slam-winning centre. “He played very well in Elche 7s back in October and continued that progress when he returned to our camp in the New Year. We’re really excited to get him out on the World Series and see him express himself for us there.”
A trio of last year’s Wales U20 backs, Cameron Lewis – who scored a sensational team try during the 2017 World Rugby U20 Championship in Georgia – Phil Jones and Will Talbot-Davies, make their third tournament appearance after debuting in Dubai in December.
Billy McBryde, Millard’s fellow Wales U20 Grand Slam winner, returns to the squad having made a good impression in his appearances last season. Meanwhile, Morgan Williams will be hoping to have an equally strong impact in Sydney after last year’s exploits.
The presence of captain Luke Treharne, Adam Thomas, Owen Jenkins and Wales’ top try-scorer Luke Morgan will provide significant experience to the team. Speedster Lloyd Lewis will be looking for an opportunity to shine on his return from injury, and Brisbane native Joe Jenkins will continue to stake his claim along with his teammates for a place in April’s Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
Wales have been drawn in Pool C this weekend, starting against France on Friday morning at 07:44 GMT, followed by Argentina (04:47) and Kenya (07:36) on Saturday.
