Gatland demands strong finish

Warren Gatland targeted a strong finish to Wales’ NatWest Six Nations campaign after a 37-27 defeat to Ireland at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium.

Tries from Gareth Davies, Aaron Shingler and Steffan Evans weren’t enough to give the visitors victory as Ireland recorded a bonus-point success.

Wales face home clashes with Italy and France next and Gatland knows both games will be vital in terms of aiming to reach the top three come the end of the tournament.

The head coach is also aware of the bigger picture which is next year’s World Cup.

“We’ve already spoken about needing to see some players in the squad against Italy. It’s important and we want to finish the Championship well. We want to finish in that top three,” Gatland said.

“There’s a chance to give some players in the squad a game and just see where they are at this level. Without making too many changes, we will look to develop the squad.”

Ireland’s tries in Dublin came from a Jacob Stockdale brace and efforts from Bundee Aki, Dan Leavy and Cian Healy. Leigh Halfpenny kicked 12 points for Wales.

Looking back on the 80 minutes in the Irish capital, Gatland said: “We were the creators of our own demise.

“In the first half, we were unlucky with a couple of things but against Ireland we spoke about discipline and not allowing them opportunities to get penalties and squeeze you.

“They were very strong in our own 22. Our line defence wasn’t as good as it needed to be. We were 13-5 up with 38 minutes on the clock and we couldn’t manage that period to half time.

“That was disappointing, but we just kept playing and scored some great tries. The guys were comfortable.

“Even with the last play, you look at it and if the ball goes to Justin Tipuric out the back then it’s a three on one and you potentially win the game. That’s how close it is.”

Italy are next up for Wales at Principality Stadium on March 11. Gatland is expecting a tough test on home soil.

“Italy have definitely improved from a conditioning point of view, they stay in the game for a reasonable period,” he said.

“You’ve got to be patient against them and be clinical when you get your chances. You can’t be too impatient.

“France managed that and scored some good tries towards the end of their game with them by keeping the pressure on.”
