Coach’s View: Las Vegas (Day Two)

Head coach Gareth Williams talks us through day two for Wales at Las Vegas 7s.

“It was a tough day of sevens again,” admitted Williams. “We lost a two-point game to Canada, and despite playing some excellent rugby, we were too casual with our final pass or ball placement and let Canada off the hook at key moments.”

Wales led 19-14 at the beginning of the second half against the Canadians, following a trio of tries from captain Adam Thomas, Ben Roach and Luke Morgan. A converted Canada try in the ninth minute stole it from them, however, setting up a meeting with Samoa.

Williams said of the 21-19 victory against the Pacific Island side: “It was an excellent effort. We executed well to get out to a lead, and then pleasingly managed to hold off Samoa’s comeback. We managed the last 90 seconds superbly and it was credit to the squad who delivered a superb win.”

Luke Morgan’s scintillating form continues on the World Rugby Sevens Series. The wing has now scored seven tries in Las Vegas, topping the charts for this leg of the tournament (and two clear of the nearest challenger, USA’s Perry Baker).

Wales’ attentions now turn to the Challenge Trophy semi-final match against France at 19:44 GMT this evening.
