Victory over France would virtually secure Gatland’s men a runners-up spot behind champions Ireland. To do that Wales will have to turn the tables on Les Bleus who beat England 22-16 last weekend.
“We are targeting second place in the Championship,” said the Scarlets captain.
“To do that we needed to beat Italy with a bonus point and we need a victory against France and hopefully with a bonus point.
“We know how big of a challenge it will be. Once one target is gone you have to create a different target and finishing second is now ours.”
The 31-year-old believes Wales will have to improve on their discipline to defeat France at the Principality Stadium.
Owens also believes France will be weaker without injured hooker Guilhem Guirado who he rates among the best forwards in the world.
“I think accuracy and discipline will be important,” said Owens.
“France will come with a lot more power in the forwards and with their two centres. We will have to go through the phases, hold on to the ball a bit longer than we did against Italy.
“Guriado is one of the best hookers in the world at the moment. His accuracy in the lineout is excellent, he is very strong over the ball and in attack he is a very hard ball carrier.
“It will be a blow for them to lose not just one of their best players but their captain as well.”
