Warren Gatland’s side will face South Africa in Washington D.C next weekend before embarking on a two-test tour to Argentina. Earlier today the Dragons lock sat down with the media to discuss the upcoming tour and his delight at being named co-captain.
How did it feel addressing the squad as captain for the first time?
“It was yesterday afternoon in our team welcoming meeting where Gats spoke and welcomed everyone into camp. I said a quiet few words to the boys saying that we are obviously in a week earlier than the Scarlets boys so we need to set the tone and make it count.
“We’ve only got six training sessions before we play South Africa so every session has got to count especially the three before we leave on the weekend.
“We are always encouraged no matter where you are in the squad to voice your opinion. It was obviously nice being co-captain with Ellis as he is one of the leaders in the squad.
“You’ve got to get your point across and get everyone to buy in.”
Was it always your dream to captain Wales?
“We had a pretty good squad there. As a youngster you always dream of playing for Wales and this dream has come true.
“My route to the top hasn’t been easy. Everyone knows my route having to play in the English Championship and come back to Wales.
“I enjoyed my time out there and I went away, worked hard, kept hold of that dream and then it happened.”
Have you been told what game you will lead the team out in?
“We haven’t had the discussion yet. I couldn’t think of a better guy to be doing it with.
“Ellis is a great leader and he’s been in some superb form for the Blues. It was nice to see him lift the Challenge Cup.
“We aren’t looking too far ahead. We’ve got a tough couple of days training here at the Vale and then we get to Washington.
“We are keeping our minds focused on the task ahead.”
How special was it being named co-captain?
“It’s special playing for Wales and to be co-captain with Ellis is even more special. If I get the chance to lead the team out it will be a special day for my family and friends.
“They’ve supported me all the way. It’s a massive achievement for me and Ellis and hopefully we get to lead the boys out.
“Since I’ve been involved there’s been some great captains here. There’s Sam and Alun Wyn but I’ve also been lead out by the likes of Dan Lydiate and Taulupe Faletau in the last Six Nations.
“They are great guys but they all lead by example as well. Mainly you’ve got to do your own job and lead by example on the pitch.”
What are your thoughts on facing South Africa and Argentina?
“It is going to be three tough tests we know that but I think we’ve got a nice balance in our squad so we are really looking forward to it.
“Gats has said that everyone is going on tour to be a part of it. Boys aren’t just going there to hold bags.
“Some of the boys are going to be buzzing to get their first caps and the others will be fighting for their jerseys.”
