Wilson is leaving the Welsh captial for Wasps and will be replaced by highly rated Australian coach John Mulvihill. And having qualified for next seasons Champions Cup Wilson has urged the Blues to kick on to the next level.
“What a way to finish my time here to come away with silverware,” said Wilson.
“It leaves the Blues in a position where this success hopefully can be built upon in the future.
“I’m sure, with the players they’ve got, and hopefully with some recruitment, they are capable of going on to bigger and better things. I’m very disappointed to be leaving this group.
“I have got some great relationships with some great players but I made my decision a long time ago for a number of reasons.”
The former Wales Under 20s head coach was delighted with the character his side showed to overcome a 20-6 half time deficit in Bilbao.
And Wilson has revealed exactly what was said in the changing room before his players ran out for the second half.
“At half-time I walked in the changing room with the other coaches armed with messages but the boys had already covered them,” he said.
“They were sat discussing some of the bits and pieces around our attacking and defensive games. What we said together as a group were we weren’t really firing any shots.
“We talked before the game about wanting to go out and play the way we have all season and fire shots. We said we would start playing from deep while the boys talked about some kick-space in behind Gloucester’s flat-line defence.
“The likes of Gareth and Jarrod Evans put some fantastic kicks in, which opened them up a bit. I have been in an English Championship final with Bristol and a World Under-20 final with Wales but lost both.
“So to get to a European final and win it has got to be the most pleasurable rugby experience I’ve ever had.”
