World Cup Sevens in sight for Wales

A cup quarter-final appearance in Exeter Sevens on Sunday left Wales coach Gareth Williams relatively happy, with the game’s showpiece event taking place in less than a fortnight.

Wales went unbeaten on day one in Exeter against Portugal (24-19), Germany (17-12) and Spain (28-5), but were unable to do the double on Portugal in the quarter-final on Sunday.

Determined to continue their good work from Saturday, they went on to beat France (36-14) and Georgia (26-21) – a series of results that could serve them well come the Rugby World Cup Sevens on 20th July.

“It was a satisfying weekend in the context of where we are in our training leading to San Francisco,” commented head coach Williams. “We were far from totally satisfied with our performances, but we knew that would be the case before going with the heavy heavy workload we undertook in the build-up.”

The World Cup leaves no room for error, with teams playing a knock-out game in the opening round. For Wales, that’s a meeting with Zimbabwe. Williams said: “We have another tough week ahead, and the final two weeks before the World Cup will be about refining our game and finalising our squad for the first-round match.”

Wales Sevens – Exeter squad: Lloyd Evans, Ben Roach, Jared Rosser, Afon Bagshaw, Cai Devine, Owen Jenkins, Luke Treharne, Lloyd Williams, Tom Williams, Cory Allen, Jay Jones, Will Talbot-Davies.
