Evans fit and ready to fire

Wales wing Steffan Evans is back fit and raring to go with the Scarlets ahead of the new season.

The young flyer suffered what at the time looked a worrying knee injury during Warren Gatland’s side’s 22-20 win over South Africa in Washington in June.

It meant Evans was forced home and missed the two Tests with Argentina as Wales clinched a first series win in the land of the Pumas since 1999.

Luckily, the 23-year-old did not require surgery to fix the problem and he is now back in training with his region.

“My rehab has gone well and this week I’ve been fully back in with the team,” Evans said.

“I think I’m ahead of schedule so I’m hoping to get one of the pre-season games in before the campaign starts.

?“It’s all gone well and better than I thought it would. Looking back on the injury, it wasn’t pretty to see. When I came back and I went to see the doctor he told me I’d had quite a lucky escape.

“I was very happy with that and I didn’t need an operation. The surgeon gave me good news and ever since then I’ve been working to make sure I can try to get back before the season started.

“Missing out on two Tests was tough, but being fit was my priority at that stage. To see the boys carry on in the way they did and win in Argentina was fantastic.

?“Personally I was devastated, but at the same time happy to see them get a positive result.”

After some impressive form for the Scarlets, Evans now has 10 Wales starts to his name and was a regular feature in Gatland’s side both last autumn and in the 2018 Six Nations.

With the 2019 World Cup on the horizon, he is hoping for another big year.

“I had two weeks away in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Two weeks wasn’t very much, but my main goal was to come back in and get fit and I’m happy I’ve done that,” Evans said.

“I’m feeling good. It was my first day back training with the Scarlets lads on Monday and there is a buzz around with the new players which is exciting.”
